This is an exciting area for leisure hiking in Sri Lanka. You can reach Pitawala area via Raththota - Pallegama road (Around 25km from Matale).
This is a part of Knuckles Mountain Range. If you want a more challenging hike, you have to go further up and go into Knuckles Range (Dumbara Kadu in Sinhala). In the same pathana area, you can visit one of the mini 'Worlds End' too. (A High cliff where you can see vast area below).
I really like the stretch of road from Laggala to Illukkumbura. It is trully magnificent.

mmm, another place I really really love, the Laggala-Pallegama road... Passed through it once, quite by accident. We were coming to Kandy from Polonnaruwa, and decided to take this route, turning off from Elahera if I'm not mistaken... Truly one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country, I think there was a television/radio transmission tower somewhere up there too.
Yes. That is Riverston tower. The above picture was taken somewhere close to that tower. I will bring more posts on Laggala Pallegama area soon as I have not posted enough. As you said this is a fascinating area.
If you turned from Elahera you must have come via Girithale-Naula road or Polonnaruwa Naula road via Angamedilla along the edge of Wasgomuwa Reserve. Angamedilla road is a superb one for a nature lover.
I think we must've taken the Girithale road, since we were staying at a hotel near the Girithale tank. I don't think I've ever been to Angamedilla, but I saw it once on TV, on that superb program "Ganga Dige". If I'm not mistaken it is where the Amban Ganga is diverted to bring water into the Parakrama Samudra, isn't it?
Yes, you are correct on Angamedilla and the Amban Ganga diversion to Parakrama Samudraya. I avidly watched Mr. Jackson Anthony's programme-'Ganga dige'. But I have missed the part you mentioned.
The same area is full of ancient ruins and historically important sites. Most importantly there are many camping locations in this area.
I slightly remember it now.. gosh.. I totally need to go there again to fetch my old memories.. =D Thanks a lot for the links.. do you have more pics of pitawala pathana?
Harumi,
You should go there again..It is not place you can cover in oneday.even though you covered it all..still it has a lot more to offer each time you go there..
I will post a few more on Pitawala pathana and Knucles area soon..
tks for the comments!!
