Little Haven

When I visited Bambarakiri Ella last year, I missed this smaller waterfall named as Punchi Bambarakiri Ella. So, this time when I came to Knuckles Range I made sure I see both.

I crossed the suspension bridge and saw the bigger falls and then walked further steps down and came to this little haven. It is a small waterfall, nevertheless an excellent place.

The Bridge on the River Kwai

Hope some of you may remember the award winning film in the 1950’s – The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Although the plot was set in Thailand, most of it was filmed in Kithulgala, Sri Lanka. The most important part of the film, the bridge was built across River Kelani instead of River Kwai. There is no bridge here today, but you can still see some of the reminiscences of the temporary bridge built just for the film. The above picture shows a recent image of the exact location where the bridge was built in 1957. I have added more pictures of this place here .

You can reach this place via Avissawella - Nuwara Eliya Road (A7). Just before Kithulgala Town, you have to turn to your right and walk along a foot path about a kilometer to reach this place.

Edanda

This is called ‘Edanda’ in Sri Lanka. It may be one of the most elementary methods of bridge building, yet it serves the purpose. You will come across similar bridges, in most of the footpaths in Sri Lankan villages.

The above Edanda was captured on my way to Kabaragoi Ella.

Thelgamu Oya

Thelgamu Oya is one of the main water resources in Knuckles region. It is a tributary of Amban Ganga, which eventually joins with River Mahaweli.

The above picture was taken from a foot bridge at the start of Maningala Trail. This foot bridge is situated at the border of Rathninda and Etanwela villages.

You can enjoy cool spring water of Thelgamu Oya at Illukkumbura too.

I am proud to mention that above image was selected for this wonderful site - Scenic Sunday.

Also, I'm thrilled to see that above picture is picked by Conservation Carbon Company in their blog.

Anonymous Waterfall

Above small but attractive waterfall was seen very close to Akasa Bokkuwa. In fact it is clearly visible from the top of the bridge like this. Yet no one knew a name for this waterfall.

The bridge, Akasa Bokkuwa is quite high as you can see here from the top. Below the waterfall, there is a small pool of water, where you can enjoy cool spring water to your heart content. The full set of photos of this attractive place is shown here.

I hope you will notice the small house just above the waterfall. Who doesn’t like to live there?

Akasa Bokkuwa

A Bokkuwa is usually a small bridge. So Akasa Bokkuwa can be translated as ‘small bridge in the sky’.

Akasa Bokkuwa is situated in the village, Athwelthota in the Kaluthara District. If you ever travel along Agalawaththa - Kalawana road, you will come across this interesting bridge situated in a very beautiful surrounding.

It was built in the early 20th century and it is constructed in such a way that the weight of the bridge is held by the arch. This narrow bridge joins two steep hills on either side and it is possibly the highest of this sort of bridges in Sri Lanka. Hence it has got this unique name.

Suspension Bridge No.2

I posted about a suspension bridge (sangili palama) some time back too. This time, I am bringing a similar foot bridge but smaller than the earlier one. This bridge was found near Bamabarakiri Ella waterfall. The good thing about this bridge is that it allows you to cross the stream as well as to take some good pictures of the fall from the bridge.

More pictures of the bridge and the fall is uploaded here.

Bambarakiri Ella

This waterfall is situated in a very attractive location in Raththota area, pass Matale. You can reach here via Raththota – Pallegama Road.

There are two waterfalls (Maha Bamabarakiri Ella and Punchi Bambarakiri Ella) in the same location and the larger fall is shown in the photo. There is a small suspension bridge built in front of the waterfall to walk across the stream. You can view more photos of this beautiful waterfall, here.

Kukule Ganga

Kukule Ganga is an exciting area for an adventurer. There are many different places to see along the river and its close proximity. There are waterfalls like Makeliya Ella, Caves like Pahiyan Lena (Fa Hien) in addition to the picturesque river itself. The picture above and a few more were taken near the suspension bridge at Kosgulana.

A traveler could reach Kukule Ganga via many attractive routes. Kalutara - Mathugama Road, Horana - Bulathsinghala Road and Ratnapuara - Kalawana Road are some of them.

Sangili Palama

'Sangili Palama' is what we call for a suspension bridge. Unlike the ‘Golden Gate’, it is quite fun to walk across these smaller versions! You feel the movement of the bridge at every step.

This suspension bridge is situated at Kosgulana. It is built over Kukule Ganga, which is a tributary of River Kalu. This bridge links Kaluthara District with Rathnapura Distict and in other words, you can walk from Western Province to Sabaragamuwa Province by crossing this bridge.
