Edge

Above photo was taken from the edge of the hard rock on top of Diyaluma. A few feet away, there is a vertical drop and water falls about 700 feet and goes under the bridge of Beragala - Wellawaya Road. You can see the road below and a van travelling on the road like a dot.

Makara Thorana to Sama Vihara

This is the path from Makara Thorana to Sama Chethiya on the way to Sri Pada peak (Nallathanni Route). When you take the bend, you will see four more water falls.

Wellawaya

Wellawaya is a town in Monaragala District, with access roads to Arugam Bay, Thissamaharama, Haputhale and Ella. A2 main road, which starts from Colombo, ends at Wellawaya, after passing the entire southern coastal belt. A4 road to Batticaloa also goes pass Wellawaya.

It is a beautiful place as you can see the mountains of Haputhale and Ella from there. I posted about scenic Ella and Beragala roads sometime back.

This stretch of paddyfields were seen about 5 km from the town, on the way to Buduruwagala.

The Road

I once mentioned that A23 (Ella-Wellawaya) is one of the most scenic roads in Sri Lanka. Then my friend Sbarrkum mentioned that he likes Beragala – Wellawaya stretch even more. I also had to agree with him.

I took the above picture on the same road closer to Beragala.

I hope it will give a glimpse of this very scenic road to all of you.

Devon

Devon is another famous waterfall in Sri Lanka.

It is situated close to St. Clair Waterfall of Thalawakele. In fact like St. Clair, you can view this picturesque sight from A7 road (Avissawella – Nuwara Eliya).

The fall is more than 300 feet high and it is formed of a tributary of River Mahaweli, known as Kothmale Oya.

Ginigathhena

There are many routes to enter Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. A7 road via Ginigathhena Pass is one of them. This particular picture was taken at Ginigathhena.

Down the Hill

This picture was taken while going towards Haputhale along A4 road. Here, I’m looking towards Uda Walawe side.

You will see similar sceneries during most part of the journey, along this road.

Thirty Kilometres

Ella – Wellawaya road (A23) is one of the most scenic roads in Sri Lanka.

Ella is situated in the eastern boundary of central highlands and Wellawaya belongs to the low country. The 30 kilometre route from Ella to Wellawaya will descend you nearly 3000 feet. This elevation difference will give you contrasting landscape from the start to end within short distance. The winding road will take you through one of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in Sri Lanka.

The first part of this route is the best part and you will get to see similar sceneries like in the above picture. More pictures of this route are uploaded here.

Paradise for a Hiker

This picture was taken close to Haldummulla on A4 road. The two pointed mountains on the left are known as Balathoduwa and Gonmolli Kanda. Both are over 2000 metres high. The plateau on your right is Horton Plains and the valley in between is where you find Bambarakanda waterfall.

Balathoduwa and Gonmolli Kanda are visible from World’s End, if it is a clear day without heavy mist. If you look closer in the picture, you may see a smaller mountain in front of Balathoduwa. It is known as Wangedigala belonging to the same mountain range. It was used as a watch tower in the ancient times.

I wanted to show this picture because, what lies in front of you is a paradise for a hiker!

Towards Laxapana

Hope you remember the road to Diyaluma Falls and Bambarakanda Falls, I posted longtime back.

Most of the roads leading to waterfalls in Sri Lanka are quite stunning. The above picture is another example.

It was taken as soon as I turned towards Laxapana waterfall from Maskeliya road, near Seven Hills Farm. The mist covered mountain is Saptha Kanya Range.

More from Dedugala Road

Today, I’m bringing you the remainder of the refreshing journey I went from Bulathkohupitiya to Dedugala.

As I mentioned in a few other posts, this stretch of 12 km has many surprises. A traveler will come across prominent waterfalls like Rukmal Ella and Rikilla Ella. Also, he will see many smaller unknown water cascades like this one.

One of the prominent sceneries along this road is the 3000 feet high Dulgale Mountain. The road will go pass many rubber estates as shown in the above picture.

In addition to above, the narrow winding road will take you through many interesting places like this cave.

More pictures uploaded here.

Mirrors

This photo was taken close to Kalawana on Agalawaththa – Kalawana Road. These paddy fields in the distance really looked like large mirrors.

Colombo Sunset

This photo is not from the wild but taken within city limits. This scenery was captured from Marine Drive, Wellawaththa. I pass this stretch every evening, so thought of bringing some evening delights of Colombo.

Towards Pallegama

When you travel along Raththota - Pallegama road the highest point is known as Riverston. This area is quite cool due to high altitude and the mountains are misty most of the time. When you pass this spot, the road starts to descend towards Pallegama.

There is a particular place just after Riverston, where you can see a panoramic view of Knuckles region and beyond. This picture was taken from there and it is one of my favourite places in Sri Lanka.
