Waterfalls in Colombo District

Did you ever think that there are waterfalls in Colombo District? I was not sure until I saw above waterfall a few days back. In fact there are at least 4 waterfalls within Colombo District perimeter.

This waterfall known as Kumari Ella (Falls) is situated close to Puwakpitya in the historical Seethawaka Kingdom. You have to turn from Colombo – Avissawella Road towards Thummodara and continue about 2 km. If you travel further on the same road you can see three more waterfalls namely Ella Uda Ella, Ranmudu Ella and Dambora Ella.

This waterfall is very small in size (12 feet tall), yet quite beautiful especially during rainy seasons. The waterfall is made out of a tributary of River Kelani. Kumari Ella is a popular bathing spot as well but it is not the safest location for such activities. I have attached more photos of this interesting place here.

More about the waterfalls of Colombo District can be found in this interesting website - srilankanwaterfalls.net .

Thanks for the picture of this pretty waterfall. As Betsy and I have discovered, a waterfall doesn't have to be big to be pretty. I enjoyed your other pictures from this site as well.

Your small waterfall is 12 feet tall. My mini waterfall is 12 inches tall.

wow K! I wasn't aware that there were waterfalls in the Colombo district! Good find! :D

Puwakpitiya is a very rich in water resources isn't it? As far as I know it's the only spot on the Colombo - Rathnapura road that floods frequently... :D

Rushing water falling over rocks is always spectacular... no matter the size... and as you say after rain especially! The sound is soothing and positive ions do calm the spirit within us. I love them and this one seems great. Why would it not be the safest location for bathing? Carol

Chanux,
Thanks for your comments!

Sunny,
Yes the sound of water here is very soothing!

George,
You are very correct; Even the smallest of waterfall is very attractive!

Rainfield,
12 inches waterfall – I love to see that one :)

Chavie,
I could not see the other three as I was on my way to some other place. If you get time, make a visit to all four. It is just about 50 km from Colombo city. Puwakpitiya area is quite rich with water resources. We saw many water streams in addition to the fall.

Gadgetgirl,
Thanks for your comments!

Linnea W,
This indeed a unique place as we usually believe waterfalls are in the hill country.. I too wish the beauty would remain as it is for many generations!

Natural Moments,
I agree..the sound of water is very relaxing..! Thanks for your comments!

Betchai,
Yep I agree with you :) Thanks for your comments

Carol,
The rocky face below is very slippery; also you get quite a strong current during rainy season. So it is not the safest place and there have been a few incidents happened at this place too. So people have to be careful when bathing this place.
Anyway that is not an obstacle to visit this place and enjoy the beauty. :)
Thanks a lot for your comments!
