A City Walk

The city is not my favorite place for a walk but I really enjoyed this half a kilometer walk in the heart of the city of Colombo. This straight path, which links the Independence Square and the Planetarium in the University of Colombo premises is developed quite recently. Further development is planned here and the idea is to make a greener and more environmentally friendly area within the city.

The whole walkway is paved and quite a lot of trees are planted all along the path. Already this is quite shady but once the trees grow up further it will be one of the coolest and greenest walkways in the city. Although there were very few people in this area yesterday, I hope to see more people visit this wonderful place in the near future.

Wow.. the planetarium.. Great pics K! And nice to hear about Colombo planning on going green. High time they should. This place already looks like a haven for anyone who wants to escape the heat and bustle of the city.

Great shot. It is nice to see pathways with the trees planted on either side. This has become a rare sight now a days due to the greed of man.

First, thank you very much for taking the time to stop at my Pick a Peck of Pixels blog and make me and you some history. I still think I can reach that mystical goal of 10,000 visitors in a short period of time and with you being a Follower or stopping and leaving a comment there, I know I will make it.

I was pleased as punch to see the new walk way your city is creating. It is landscaped very nicely and as you suggested, when those trees grow up it will be a glorious place to walk during the day and evening. I like the way they have paved it also. It kind of reminds me of those acient Roman roads that were paved with cobblestones and in many places in the world they are still there and still in use.

In my area where I live here in Southwest Ohio, the old Railroad tracks were used as a base for a bike path or we call it a Bike Trail. It is some 13 miles long and runs, for the most part, through the countryside. So you may pass a field of growing corn or a field of horses or cattle.

I would love to take a walk down this pathway, especially right around sunset!

That is a beautiful place to take a walk. There are very few cities with places like it. They claim to be making something like that in my city, but I'm not sure if they can do it.

Chamila,
Guess you have come to this place! Yes it is one of the most beautiful places within Colombo.

Michelle,
Definitly..I too expect more people to come here very soon.

Mommythecook,
Thanks for dropping by and for your wonderful comments. You born in SL! Lucky you :) Time you come to visit here more often!

Betchai,
It is..’Calm’ is the correct word to describe this place and you do not get that in a city so easily :)

Icy BC,
I enjoyed the walk very much. The best time would be an evening until the trees grow to a certain height.

Chavie,
I too came to UoC for some other purpose and saw this place by chance. You can reach here either from independence square or Prof. Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha off Reid Avenue.

Harumi,
Yes, it is the high time.. After all Colombo is known as the garden city of South Asia for a long time. That beauty is fast dwindling but I think this pathway is a sincere effort to bring back its former glory!

Bhavesh,
I’m with you mate! City is not my place for a day out but this place looks cool!

Rajesh,
Yes it is a rare sight, I was very happy to see this effort to make a greener city..

Abraham,
You are welcome!
The Romans were master city designers and there is a lot to learn from them even in the technologically advanced 21st century!
Thanks for sharing very interesting information about your area - Southwest Ohio.
That bike trail seem to be wonderful for a cycle excursion :)
Hope you could achieve your goal!

Linnea,
You are correct! It will be much better in the evening right before the sunset :)

Ratty,
Hope they could make a similar walkway in your city too. That will be great for nature lovers!

Thanks all for your wonderful comments!

Garden city of South Asia? Didn't know about that part.. =D

Kirigalpoththa said...

Harumi,
Yes it was know that way for long time. In fact as per this article it was the Garden City of Asia!
Still we can find quite a few lingering evidence of that former splendor.
Hope everyone could work together to revive that beauty again..

I hope to discover this park the next time I am in Colombo.

Hi Pierre,
Not difficult to find it. The best time is either early in the morning or after 4pm, otherwise it will be a bit too hot here. :)
Thanks for your comments!

actually i wonder most of the colombo people used to be working in an unstoppable manner. i guess the reason is colombo is the financial center point of the country. even very few people visit the viharamahadevi park which is in the heart of colombo. hope eco friendly places like this much popular among people and thanks for the clue kiri...

Mistik Chazer,
Only scouts take the real use of viharamaha Devi Park, as we saw a week back at the Colombo camporee:) Hope we can have more greener places like this within Colombo :)
Thanks very much for your comments!
