Water Lilies Galore

This picture and a few more here were captured at Anawilundawa (Annaiwilundawa) bird sanctuary. The water surface is completely covered with water lilies and other plants.

I would like to reiterate exact comments made by Gallicissa in one of my earlier posts regarding this area for the interest of all the readers. Thanks Amila for sharing these important facts.

‘This (Annaiwilundawa) is excellent for birding especially during Nov-April when migrants supplement resident birds. It was designated as RAMSAR wetland due to its avi-faunal richness. It is one of the three RAMSAR wetlands in Sri Lanka. The other RAMSAR wetlands are Bundala and Madhu Ganga Sanctuary.

The area is good for butterfly and dragonfly enthusiasts and there are enough interesting things for a keen naturalist to spend a whole day here.’

I would love to go there when the water lilies are in full bloom.

I actually had to click on the picture to see the water beneath the lilies. Yes, I think it would be a beautiful sight to see the lilies bloomed out. Have a great evening.

A field of watery water lilies! Yes, it must be spectacular when they are all in bloom. Perhaps you can return at that time?! Thanks for visiting my Skywatch Friday post. I enjoy your comments...

I've heard that water lilies reduce evaporation from these tanks and this must come in handy when it comes to keeping the water intact, especially in the dry zone... :)

nice picture K! :)

You reminded me that a visit to that part of Sri Lanka is long overdue. I usually combine it with visits to Chilaw Sandspits (shoreline beyong the fishing village), Palawi Saltpans and Nawadamkulama Tank with a midday break at Putlam Resthouse to replenish lost liquids and enjoying an artery-clogging rice and curry lunch with devilled cuttlefish and prawns.

It must be gorgeous by the time water lilies are in full bloom. There will be flowers, flowers and flowers all over the place.

Unseen Rajasthan,
Great to hear you coming this way. Good to plan it out as there is lot to see. Just drop an email if you need any help.

Michelle,
It is totally covered with water lilies and tis difficult to see any water from the top :) . I hope I could get a chance to go when the whole tank is full of water lilies.

Mkreider,
Thanks a lot for your wishes!

Betchai,
There are quite a lot of butterflies and dragonflies there. You will surely like it when the lilies are in full bloom..

Betsy,
I’m sure you will like this place especially the flowers are in full bloom. This place is close to the Sea too.

Linnea,
You are welcome!
A field of watery water lilies – a nice one! :)
I too hope I could get a snap when the whole place is covered with white flowers…

Chavie,
mmm.. If that is correct I’m sure this place will never go dry with all these ’carpet of lilies’ as Harumi mentioned. May be it is true as they act as a direct cover for sunlight.

Harumi,
Plush carpet of lilies – I like that:)
Yes I should go there to capture the white Olus in full bloom.. should be very beautiful.

Gallicissa,
Chilaw sandspits I have seen but not the other two. I have gone to Chilaw rest house sometime back and had a tasty meal but not being to Puttalam RH. Thanks for sharing some good spots and also the mouthwatering narrative :)

Rainfield,
Yes it will be flowers, flowers and flowers all over the place. Pity I could not get a picture with all the flowers..

Thanks all for your wonderful comments!
