KIRIGALPOTHTHA, THE SECOND HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN SRI LANKA, IS ONE OF THE BEST HIKING ROUTES IN THE ISLAND. THIS WEBSITE UPDATES ON EXCITING PLACES FOR HIKING & CAMPING AND ALSO SHARES INFORMATION OF SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS IN SRI LANKA.
These birds on the telephone wire were gazing at a particular object for sometime. Later, I got to know that there was a rat snake on the other side of the lane.
With their dark-colored heads and bills they seem to me as mythic guardian birds of Kirigalpoththa. ...Oh my imagination always flies with such images. :) Regards from greece!
Betsy, They are actually very small birds. The length from bill to tail is about 5-6cm. But as you said very colorful.
Sunny, Yess, the snake terrified the birds for sometime and then vanished in the bushes.
Rainfield, Yes, they had synchronized movements :)
Loshini, It is a medium scale non venomous snake, usually fed on rats, little lizards, birds etc. The rat snake I mentioned is locally known as Gerandiya.
Me-shak, This is a quite common bird where I live. I had a even better encounter with a similar kind sometime back too.
Μαριανα, Yes we are always notified about oncoming threats from any snakes cos of their typical calls. Only problem is they do the same for cats too. :)
Frieda, Thanks a lot as always :)
Magerata, Yes, thought of doing a different post from hiking :) I was watching them for a while from the window of the second floor.
Betchai, I was about two metres from the birds. They didn't notice me as they were quite absorbed on the snake faraway.
George, Yes, I also like their bluish black little bills.
Offthebeatentrack, Yes my watch birds :)
Cassiopeia, I went after the rat snake to take a picture but it vanished in the bushes.
Eileen, Yes, they were quite worried about the danger closeby.
Cat, Thanks very much!
Knatolee, Yes, these birds are smaller, so not unlucky like the bats. You get electrocuted, only if you touch two power lines. Bats are bigger and tend hit both power lines. Also remember they fly at night and can't see most of the power lines on their way.
Natural Moments, Thanks a lot for your comments :)

Pretty birds!! (...and good lookouts!)
The curvature of their beaks is so interesting.
Amaris,
I think their curved bills are for nectar feeding. Thanks for your comments as always.
Love those little birds... What beautiful colors... Love that yellow on them. And yes, they are really 'gazing' at something interesting!!!
Betsy
Such lovely colors on the little birds and I'd rather see them than the snake, I think :)
☼ Sunny
A couple of them form a good company.
Cute shot:) erm what's a rat snake?
Lovely picture, K. I agree with Amaris. The yellow yellow belly looks awesome. Looking forward for more.
Cheers!

Looks like you had a good vantage point! Also a good view of the electrical cables. Different from your regular photos. Interesting!
where you up somewhere near when you took this shot? they are pretty and the picture is very clear.
This is a great picture of these birds. I like the yellow on their breast.
hehe, they were keeping a close watch eh?
Very interesting birds. I'd stare at a rat snake too!

Beautiful shot of sun birds.
Amazing, they look like identical twins and their posture is like a mirror image!
Ah, the anti-predator early warning system has been activated I see! :D Nice capture K!
Anjana,
Thanks :)
Rajesh,
Glad you like it :)
Sachira,
Looks like almost the same but they could be male and a female but I do not know how to figure it out.
Chavie,
Yes, I have this system fixed free of charge, where I live :)
Thank you for visiting my blog.I like this photo of the two birds. They look like twins :-) Do you know what they are called?
Those are gorgeous!
Can't believe they are watching for a snake when they sit high above like that.
Amazing!
Joyful,
You are welcome :)
I think they are called sunbirds, but not sure on the exact type.
Thanks for your comments.
Nicole,
Yes, they are very alert and can see very far :)
Thanks for your comments.
Such clear capture.
Well taken. :)
They are pretty birds, great capture. I guess they were worried about the snake.
Such lovely little birds. Great capture!
Lovely bird shot!
One of the things I remember about SL is fruit bats hanging dead from power lines, having been electrocuted! This is a much nicer image. :)
Its like you can see with the eyes of a bird. Nice capture.
Eileen,

Cat,
