Crab or Spider?

I am quite curious about spiders from a long time and this particular species is one of my favorite. Well you already know it is a spider but doesn’t it look like a crab?

See the crab like body armor in the above picture and the claw in this picture.

It is a lady spider with skirt.

That spider fascinated me with it's unusual triangular shape. I only saw them in 80s around my old place in Panadura, but never again and nowhere else. May be I lost my curiosity to look as I grew up. They are quite small, aren't they? Thanks for bringing back a childhood memory. :-)

Lovely picture! It looks more like a flying spider. But, I agree with you, spiders are truly spectacular and this one is no different!

You captured the spider very well, congratulations!
(I posted a picture of a spider yesterday, by the way).
But I must confess your spider looks quite scary to me---how big is it?

This is a great macro of the spider. I'm not sure what it looks like, but that body armor is interesting.

Wow! What a spider! Never seen one before. Is there a particular area in SL that you find them?

From that angle it reminds me of a moth.
What a weird fellow :)

Rainfield,
ha..ha.. I didn’t notice that! :D

Amila,
Hey, Similar story! I used to see this same spider quite often long time back, (in late 80s and early 90s) but then I didn’t see it for a long time..until I captured this photo a few days before.
Yes it has a very unique triangular shape. :)

Knatolee,
Glad you like it. Yes it was one of my favorite spiders :)

Betsy,
Yes when they are magnified they look scary. It reminds some creatures in fantasy stories.

Sankara,
Yes, it has a kite like body and you feel like he is flying :)

Frieda,
I saw your spider picture. It is lovely! I captured a similar one a few months back. I have uploaded that one, here. :)

George,
Yes its body armor reminds me some kind of ski-fi space ship or a battle tank. Thanks for your comments :)

Hoot-a-Toot,
This particular one was seen in Gampaha area recently. Amila (above) mentioned it was seen in Panadura long time back. So you should be able to find them in Western Province of SL. Thanks for your comments :)

Nicole,
Yes, he is a weird spider. Thanks for your comments :)

Thanks all for your wonderful comments.

Cat,
Yes, they all look scary especially when magnified :)
Actually it is very small. - About 1.5cm from from the end of one 'claw' to the other.
Thanks for your comments.

Anjana,
Yep I am glad they are so tiny. :)

BLOGitse,
Yep not a very lovable character isn't he? :D

Silent Moments,
I think crab spider should be the better name :)

Thanks all for your comments!

It does look kind of like a crab. Spiders are fascinating creatures, but maybe from a bit of a distance.

I've just figured what I miss in places like Kuwait and Egypt.
These Critters to take photos of :)

Kirigalpoththa said...

Naquillity,
Yes they come all shapes and colours. I'm fine and hope you are keeping well too.

Betchai,
Yes, hope I'll find more of them as I used to do.

Ratty,
Yes there are poisonous ones but this one is a very innocent one.

Nicole,
Yes, you probably won't see many critters over there.

Thanks all for your comments.

Aloha!
This is a Spiny orb-weaver Gasteracantha geminata (Fabricius, 1798).

I have a picture showing its interesting shape here:

What a rare capture! I've seen many kinds of spiders before but never a one of this sort. Totally exotic, more ET like and super scary.. =D

Kirigalpoththa said...

Harumi,
I used to see this one quite often during early 90's but later I hardly saw them. This one is after many years. So i think it is a rare spider to be seen now. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Kiri, you already know I photographed one of these recently and posted in my blog. Two other spiders in that post have been identified, have a look back!  (in comments)

Kirigalpoththa said...

Hi Amila,
Good to all of them identified properly! :D
