Patanangala

Patanangala is a beach belongs to Yala National Park. This characteristic rock and the excellent beach make this place a memorable one. This is one of the few places where visitors are allowed to get down from their vehicles during their safari through Yala.

Awesome shot! Yala continues to amaze me...The small hill in the background looks like a volcano.

Is it active or dormant? :-)

It is a beautiful beach. Wonderful photo. I wish I was standing on the beach now.

Beautiful beach, one of my favourite spots in Yala:)

Nice shot, K. I have read that the flat top of this rock has been a result of erosion caused when the sea-levels were much higher in the pleistocene...

Didn't realize that the rock had a name when I included its picture in this blog post 4 years ago. Thanks!

Nice sandy beach. I just noticed this photo has captured many beautiful curves between the sea water, surf, damp sand and the dry sand. A very artistic pic.

Wonderful capture!
Love the color of the sea and how it contrasts with the color of the sand.

The rock does make that beach unique. It's beautiful, looks like a wonderful place to visit.

Beautiful shoreline, weirdly not many people along this stretch. That's a good thing :)

Sankara,
Yala continues to amaze me too even though I have been there a number of times. The rocky outcrop in the back ground is not a volcano. Luckily there are no such dangers in this beach but this particular place was badly affected from the Tsunami in 2004.

Rainfield,
Thanks mate! :)

Eileen,
You’ll surely love an hour or two on this beach.

Offthebeatentrack,
Yep, It is such a great place to be. :)

Gallicissa,
Really! That is an interesting theory. Such massive erosions can happen and leave a harder rocky surface protruding like this after millions of years.

Anuradha,
Saw your post, very interesting and yes it is Patanangala! :)

Harumi,
I love curved beaches and glad you noticed so many interesting features of the beach :) I would have loved it better, if I could show the difference colors (shades of blue) of the sea too. Unawatuna is the best place to show that.

Mahasen,
Glad you like it, I’m sure you will do wonders in this beach with your camera!

Me-shak,
I shall update more from this particular area :)

Diane,
Yep, the rock is such a unique feature of the beach and makes it look very attractive.

Loshini,
In this part of Sri Lanka you will see many similar lonely unspoiled beaches.

Thanks all for your wonderful comments!

Wow.. really? Don't have any close ups of the sea? Yep, I've only heard of Unawatuna's stunning beauty, yet to discover it with my own eyes. =D

Such a beautiful beach and no people!

Kirigalpoththa said...

Vernz,
That is great! Please show it to me when you are done :)

Harumi,
I shall post a few from other angles as well. More than the sea I like the coast here. You must go and see places like Unawatunaa and Ahungalla.

Betchai,
Yes for me this is one of the best of Sri Lankan beaches.

Rajesh,
Thanks mate!

Linnea,
Yes I think a beach like this is better than a crowded beach :)

I am no geologist, but my husband knows his rock and soil, so we often have discussions. I wonder why this rock is different from all the others around it?

Cat,
Thanks a lot for your comments.

Lorac,
Many thanks for your comments.

Ann,
I too have no idea. May be some volcanic action millions of years ago. Thanks for your comments. :)

might be a nice spot to camp and kitesurf!

Last morning at about 630-730, I saw 1 large bear and two cubs coming out of the cave at Patanangala Rock, most visible from near the Beach Wadiaya which has been set up there for the fishing season two weeks ago (after 3 years). Just before the bears came out, leopard walked calmly on top of the rock and sat down at the edge, facing the sea. Bears and leopard were visible at the same time. It was the most amazing wildlife sighting of my adult ife.

Kirigalpoththa said...

Hi Ravana,

Wow..wow! Leoapard is a rare sights and so as the bear. If you get both at the same place..with the beautiful setting of Patanangala rock..I guess it is some sighting!

Any photos? :)
