A Study in Scarlet

I saw this bright red seeds / fruits recently in a house near Pepiliyana. The tree which was about 15 feet tall seems to belong to the family of palm trees. I saw lot of birds attracted to the same but I did not try to eat them although they look very edible. I was unable to find the name of this interesting palm.

Any guess anyone?

Veitchia merrilli has pretty red fruit, but that's just a guess. Very pretty, indeed.

They look a bit similar to dates, but I don't think that's quite right. Whatever they are they make a lovely photo.

Unseen Rajasthan,
Thanks for your comments :)

Prospero,
I just googled for Veitchia merrilli, and it looks very similar! Thanks!!

Betsy,
Yes..birds were right at it and looks like they were having a party of it!

Michelle,
Since birds are eating it is not poisonous at all. Definitly looks edible but not sure until i get proof :)

Yakayaka,
Nice to know that you have the same tree in your garden. I found this name for ‘kaha kurulla’ from Wikipedia - Black-hooded Oriole.
Also it seem to be the same type of birds that come to this fruit.. !

Chavie,
Seems like this is a popular tree now. Lots of people have it in their garden :)

Gadgetgirl,
Guess you mean the same kaha kurulla that Yakayaka mentioned.

Robin,
Yes, definitely it must be related to dates and similar palms. Question is whether they are sweet as dates :)

Thanks all for your comments and information!

The fruit looks edible but until identified I would not eat. It is the sane where I just moved. There is alot of fruit on trees I do not recongize. Will eat if I can figure out what is ok.

Don't know what they are but I can see why the birds would be attracted to them, though. Don't think I'd try eating them...probably couldn't reach them!

Kirigalpoththa said...

Linnea,
You may be able to reach them. It is about 6 and half feet above ground :)
