Coastal Belt from Chilaw to Kalpitiya

The stretch of coastline North of Colombo up to Chilaw has been quite popular for tourism and leisure activities for a long time.

After the situation of the country turns better the tourism industry seem to be thriving in this region and beyond. Recently the region North of Chilaw up to Kalpitiya is also attracted by many large scale hotel companies both local and foreign.

The coastal belt between Chilaw and Kalpitiya up to now remains as a quite remote area explored by a few tourists and locals only. This region is rich with unique natural eco-system that is not found in other parts of the country. One such place is Anawilundawa area, which I mentioned sometime back. In addition the Mundal Lagoon area, the coastal belt up to Kalpitiya and the most of the main land coastline up to Wilpattu National Park and beyond, still remain as unspoiled area.

The above picture was taken at the beach front east of Anawilundawa close to a small fishing village called, Udappuwa.

the Northernmost beach I've been to on the Western seashore is Marawila, which was pretty nice (albeit very very dry!)... passed through Chilaw and Puttalam once on the way to Anuradhapura but didn't get to see any beaches... :)

I heard that Kalpitiya and the islands off it have some pretty interesting places to visit...

Chavie,

Definitely Puttalam area is quite dry if not one of the driest areas in the island.
Kalpitiya is fabulous! I remember staying one night close to the tip of Kalpitiya 4 years back. We couldn’t do any activities in the sea as there were some recorded sightings of terrorists in the deep sea, So the navy didn’t allow us to do any boat rides. Yet we had some quality time over there.

Since the situation has changed Kalpitiya will be a fabulous destination for all nature lovers, kitesurfers, and all fun loving adventurers!

Thanks for your comments!

Michelle,
This is a great beach for evening strolls. Further up you find an old fishing village called Udappuwa with very interesting community!

Rainfield,
Yes, I like the beach with coconut palms. In fact in Sri Lanka we find so many beaches with that combination.

George,
Already the number of tourist is in the ascending trend. So we can see a definite surplus of visitors in these areas soon.

Sharodindu,
Yep, thought the sky too was quite unique that day.

Betsy,
You are welcome and you will surely love a walk along this beach.

Thanks all for your wonderful comments!

Very nice when tourists find the place beautiful and secure. Works both ways for the visitors and the area.
