Ambewela

Ambewela is a very picturesque area in the hill country and you reach here on the way to Horton Plains just before Pattipola. It is situated 6000 feet above the sea level and the temperature is always around 15ÂșC through out the year.

The climatic conditions are ideal for rich grasslands and to raise dairy cattle with high yield of milk production, therefore this area is popular for dairy farming. In addition the same area is popular for tea plantation and vegetable cultivation.

Above picture was taken from the train while passing Ambewela area.

This is a wonderful picture, especially since it was taken from a moving train. I like the mist over the mountain in the background.

breathtaking... but sad when I remember that the pastures and estates at Ambewela are eating into the precious mountain forests of the Hakgala reserve...

George,
One of my favourite is the mountains covered with mist. There are plenty of such sceneries here!

Rainfield,
Yep its cool temperature in a very cooool place!

Chavie,
Yep, need a balance of both - human activities and the nature..Two things that do not go quite well together.

Thanks all for your comments!

Beautiful picture from the train, K. 6000 feet above sea level, huh???? Wow--that's pretty high up there and it looks pretty cold. I'd love it since I love cold weather.

Looks like a gorgeous place. Thanks for sharing.

'Suburb camera work,' right back at you! I knew I liked you from the first sentence in your description, 'I'm addicted to camping and hiking.' I feel, as I'm sure you do, it's just an honor to have a camera in my hand and be able to catch a bit of that feeling in an image! I look forward to keeping up with your experiences, there on the other side of the world!

Betsy,
This is one of the highest area in Sri Lanka. The climate is very close to a country in the temperate zone. Infact there is a place called New Zealand Farm where the area resembles to grassland of New Zealand.

Michelle,
Good question. The cattle graze in an area bit further away. I could not capture them from the train but surely I'll show you one soon :)

Hi James,
Atleast my addiction is not a bad one :)
i'll surely follow you via your blog from this side of the world :) - you have some great photos in your site!

Thanks all for your wonderful comments!!!

That's a cool capture, esp. from a moving train! Hope to see some cattle too the next time. =D

Thanks a lot for sharing these interesting facts about Ambewela. Didn't know this place was set at an altitude 4 times higher than ours. It sure sounds like an amazing place.

Nice photo, but I think it's not Ambewala. It is actually Great Western, Talawakelle.

Anon,
I think I have to go through the photos again. Thanks for pointing it out.
