Over the Tank Bund

This picture was taken from the road over the bund of Kala Wewa (Tank). This is a splendid road that I love to travel while watching the great ocean like tank on one side. You can reach here on your way to Anuradhapura (via Dambulla) by turning off at Kekirawa town.

As I mentioned some time back, there are many man made tanks in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Similarly we get similar roads laid over those tank bunds all over Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts.

I love bund's ! Once my hubs and I drove to yala ( we were going to 'The Ashram' ( which is on the edge of the yala forest along the manik ganga)and we took the route through Lunugamvehara which is a short cut to katharagama... I guess. Really not sure of the name but it was this beauitful isolated place, with a thin narrow long stretch of road passing through this unbelievable & huge tank. My hubs can't remember the exact name of the place either :(, Does this sound familiar ?. Eitherway, your picture is lovely. You're really soo good at this KGP. :)

A very pleasant roadway in verdant surroundings.

I learned something the other day, which you will find interesting, about the the provenance of the word Serendipity (Serendipititous Garden). I knew that it came from a story called the Three Princes of Serendip.

But I was most pleased to learn that Serendip is the Persian name for Sri Lanka!

Sunny,
Thanks a lot for your comments!

Michelle,
Yep, this is an ideal road for a bicycle trail. Unfortunately I live quite faraway from this place (200km) So couldn do that here. The principal travlleing mode of the villagres here is the bicycle. Thanks for your comments and have a fabulous day!!

Mommythecook,
Interesting! I have not gone to the ashram place you mentioned here. Looks like there are so many places to see at Yala.
The thin narrow long stretch of road must be one that goes thro' Lunugamvehera Tank. You must have come via Wellawaya and turned from Thanamalvila towards Sella Katharagama which cut across Lunugamvehera Resevoir.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience!

Prospero,
Thanks a lot for enlightening me on that!
Yep the Arab and Persian merchants used to call this island Sernedib(p) a long time back. May be they found an unexpected fortune here :)
Infact Sri Lanka was known by many names throuhgout the history.
The Greeks named it Thaprobane (E.g. Ptolemy's maps), Arabs named it Serendib, Portugese called it Celao (16th Century), Dutch named it Zeilan (17th Century) and much later the British called it Ceylon.
Thanks very much for your comments!

I love tank bunds! the Kala Wewa bund is one of the greenest I've seen, and my other favorites are the Parakrama Samudra bund and the Minneriya bund... :)

What a wonderful road for a bicycle ride! I would love to ride or walk here and enjoy the ocean view.

It is splendid to be able to cycle at a beautiful place.

Wow.. great rural scenery! we passed several bunds during our last trip but they didn't have this much of greenery or nicely carpeted roads. Some roads were under construction.

Bunds provide refreshing sights, and they're great spots for having picnics or stopover for meals during a long trip. Hope to see more pics of Kala Wewa in future. =D

Harumi,
Kalawewa is not close to the road to Anuradhapura but you have to turn from Kekirawa and travel a fair distance. This is the same tank where you see Aukana Buddha Statue. I shall upload a few more photos of the tank soon. Thanks a lot for your comments!

Sharodindu,
It is a pleasure! I shall visit your blog more often :) Thanks a lot for your comments!

Betsy,

Really? they all look the same from a distance so I always get mixed up with the names. I've yet to see Aukana statue firsthand. Have seen it only on TV.

Sure and thanks.

Harumi,
Next time when you go to Anuradhapura go via Dambulla n Kekirawa so you can do a small de-tour and visit Aukana :)

Harshi said...

Sure.. and I think we went through Dambulla and Kekirawa last time too, but cuz our destination was a lil too far, we didn't have time for any detours. Anyway I'll add this to the list, so we won't miss it the next time. Thanks again.
