Ethugalpuraya

Ethugalpuraya or Kurunegala is famous for its many surrounding rock formations. Out of them, Ethagala (Elephant rock), Anda gala (Eel rock) and Ibba gala (Tortoise Rock) are more famous rock outcrops. The name Ethugalpuraya must have derived from Ethagala which is very prominent from the town.

You can climb all of the rocks and make sure you do it early in the morning or late in the evening otherwise the heat reflected from the rock will be quite unbearable.

The view from Ethagala is superb and you can see the whole Kurunegala town, the wewa (Reservoir or tank) and endless 360 degree panaroma till the horizon!

See more pictures of Ethagala from amilatravels.blogspot.com.

How nice to see such a beautiful photo from where I live! Ethugala and the tank are my favorite spots of the city. I can never have enough of the cool and potent wind on the top of Ethugala.

But other than the tank and the Rock are there other places to visit in Kurunegala?

Kirigalpoththa said...

Pybus,
It depends on what you like to visit. One of the interesting places I have visited close to Kurunegala is Arankele Monastery. Of course you have to travel a bit further away from the town.
Kurunegala was one of the ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka for a very short period of time, so you can see the site of ancient palace/castle but what is remained is just a very few ruins. Also there are many ancient temples in the close proximity. One of the interesting places I have visited is Ridi Viharaya. Also you can see Sri Lanka's largest Granite Buddha Statue close to the temple.

BTW I just saw your website and I like it very much :)
